COUNT CARL AUGUST VON HARDENBERG was PRIME MINISTER of PRUSSIA 1750-1822. The family seat was NEUHARDENBERG SCHLOSS (CASTLE) at Norten-Hardenberg which they owned from 1287. Count Karl Hans Von Hardenberg 1891-1958 was a patriot and resigned all his public seats to avoid being forced to join the Nazi party. Called to serve in the army, he became a Major. In 1942 he was involved in the plot to assassinate Hitler. Many covert meetings took place at Neuhardenberg Schloss. If the plan had succeeded, he would have taken the role of Prime Minister of Berlin. The coup failed and he was imprisoned in a concentration camp. The camp was liberated just one day before his planned execution for treason.
