SIR JOHN HULLOCK Flight Barr Barr Armorial Crest Worcester Cup & Saucer 1825

A superb English porcelain cup and saucer, with a rich cobalt blue underglaze ground.

Enriched with raised gilding in compartments, with a centra family crest. Flight Barr and Barr, probably painted by Henry Stinton circa 1825. Blason : "An ostrich's head between two wings gu., holding in the mouth a horse-shoe or".

 

  From other pieces we understand this was made for SIR JOHN HULLOCK 1767-1829 Judge and Baron of the Exchequer. Plates with full arms display HULLOCK impaling MARTIN.  Motto 'Tentanda Via Est' , 'The way must be tried'. He resided at Thorngate House, Barnard Castle, Durham,  that he enlarged to entertain other Judges.
