DESCRIPTION
Here is an exceptional armorial piece. I believe a presentation trowel. It bears the arms of the EARL of DARTMOUTH. Incredibly, it also has a portrait painting, probably the 6th Earl, William Heneage Legge (1851-1936).
Portrait signed by G.White. George White was one of the best artists for Royal Doulton, working from 1885-1912. His vases with classical ladies are highly sought after. The gilded detail and jewelled decoration is also exceptional.
MORE DETAILS
Lord Dartmouth, GCVO, KCB, VD, TP, JP was a politician and Vice Chamberlain to the Royal Household. ( He gave daily reports to the Sovereign from parliament). He married Lady Mary Coke in 1879. He enlarged the family seat, PATSHULL HALL near Pattingham in Staffordshire, England. The west wing seems to display the same armorial. This trowel perhaps a presentation piece to mark the laying of the foundation stone.
