Fine pair Worcester Plates ARMORIAL Purple Ground BARONESS WENMAN
Superb pair of purple ground Worcester plates, centrally painted with
an extensive armorial.
Measures approx 10.25 Inches wide.
THese plates were made for SOPHIA ELIZABETH WYKEHAM (1790-1870)
created Baroness WENMAN in 1833.
She had been a lover of William Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, but he
married Adelaide of Saxe Coburg instead.
When the male Wykeham line died out, and the estates passed to Sophia, he
kept the family name alive, by creating her Baroness Wenman of Thame Park, Oxfordshire.
Baroness Wenman was fearful of being buried alive, so had a ventilated coffin in the chapel.
She was not buried until 1990.
