She married Crown Prince Umberto in 1868 and became Queen whe he suceeded to the throne in 1878.

Legend has it that the Margherita Pizza was named for a visit of King Umberto and Queen Margherita. The colours of the flag, red white and green representing tomato ,cheese and basil.
