SURTEES Armorial Plate DURHAM FAMILY

Superb armorial porcelain plate, bearing the ancient arms of SURTEES of Redworth  impaling CHAUNCY.  Circa 1890.

 

Probably made for either:

Henry Edward Surtees, of Redworth Hall (1819-1895) married to Eliza Chauncy in 1843 or

Charles Freville Surtees (1823-1906) born Redworth Hall, lived Chobham Place & Mainsforth Hall married to Bertha Chauncy in 1855.

 

  Henry enlarged Redworth Hall in the early 1890's with a grand staircase and Baronial Hall. later guests included Prince Alexander Yurievsky grandson of Tsar Alexander II.

 

 The Surtees were an ancient  Durham topographical family,

combining the Norman "sur" and Anglo Saxon "Tees" literally on the Tees river.

They claim ancestry from Siward, the Viking Earl of Northumbria. They were influential landowners, politicians, authors, soldiers and historians and touched many aspects of life in Durham and the United Kingdom from the Norman era to the mid 20th Century.

Redworth Hall late 17th Century to 1950

Mainsforth Hall 17th Century, demolished 1962. Gateposts & walls extant.

Hamsterley Hall 1810 to 1864 (Male line).

Bessie Surtees House, Newcastle.

 

Notables:

Robert Surtees (1779-1834) of Mainsforth, Antiquary, author 'History of Durham'.

Surtees Society formed in his honor. 

Bessie Surtees (1754-1831) , who eloped with the coal merchants son, to outrage, but he later became Lord Chancellor, Lord Eldon. Different line.

Robert Smith Surtees of Mainsforth (1805-1864)  Antiquary, author of sporting 'Jorrocks' stories.

Robert Lampton Surtees 1812-1863 (Elder Brother of Charles) of Redworth Hall.

Henry Edward Surtees, (younger brother of Charles Freville Surtees) married Eliza Chauncy.

Brigadier Henry Conyers Surtees (1858-1933)

CB CMG DSO MVO JP FSA. Officer,Spy, Diplomat, MP, Antiquary. Handed the Durham

Light Infantry War Memorial to Bowes Museum in 1923.

 

Evangeline Bell, socialite, grand daughter Herbert Conyers Surtees.

Virginia Surtees, nee Bell (sister of Evangeline) Art historian, author, collector Cataloque Raissonne, Rossetti. (Changed name to  inherit Mainsforth Estate).
