Worcester Armorial Plate HENRY WESTCAR EXPLORER Coat Arms Crest PAPYRUS

A superb English porcelain plate, probably Worcester. Gadrooned edge with claret ground colour, enriched with gilding. Unusual crest of a crocodile for WESTCAR. 

 

Probably the crest of HENRY WESTCAR (1798-1868) famed for his exploration of the Nile and perhaps the most important Egyptan text THE WESTCAR PAPYRUS that he discoverd in 1823/4. They tell five stories of miracles peformed by priests or magicians at the court of PHARAOH CHEOPS the fourth. Now on display at the Egyptian Museum of Berlin. Several of the stories feature crocodiles of the Nile. 

 

The story of the journey is told in his journals, now published as a book, 'Westcar On The Nile', By H.Schmidt.  ISBN: 9783895008528

 

Excellent condition. Minor re gilding to inner border.
